Stop by to build an aluminum boat with the help of Southwest Middle School students. Then test your newly constructed boat by seeing how much "cargo" it can bear. If your boat is still floating after adding the maximum load you will earn a small prize. Also check out some of the projects that students designed and built in their STEM Project Lead the Way classes this year.
Southwest Middle School is located near Universal Studios in Orlando and has had a strong commitment to STEM education for years. STEM classes provide Maker experiences, while students learn about careers and the engineering design process. Southwest Middle School hosts several STEM clubs through their YMCA After School Zone program and through their YMCA summer camp. The school also offers STEM electives at every grade level through six different Project Lead the Way (PTLW) classes. Southwest is proud to promote Career and Technical Education (CTE) classes that allow students to start exploring possible careers — some of them being “Maker” careers — early on, in preparation for the high school experience.
