Making Printers Do Weird Things
Receipt printers are cheap, simple, fast, and pretty much everywhere, which makes them perfect platforms for weird projects.
This exhibit showcases a series of projects that repurpose receipt and thermal printers as physical interfaces. Using microcontrollers, custom electronics, and web apps, these printers are able to transform into something silly, useful, and occasionally thought-provoking.
Visitors are encouraged to interact directly with the projects.
- Push a button and have a fortune-cookie style message be delivered to their hands. - Watch real-time audio be transcribed and printed out on a continuous paper reel. - Create small photo-booth style picture keepsakes from their phone
All while the electronics are on full display, including some that will show the individual bytes being sent to the hardware.
